Framed Binding Option Tutorial

This picture tutorial shows the process and directions for adding frames to your piece before applying your usual binding. It showcases the Majesty Medallion IX (36" x 36") which features two frames.

Some pieces just need more color before putting the binding on, like I did for Majesty Medallion IX, created by machine.

These directions are for adding two fabric frames before putting your actual binding on.  The first frame is ½” wide and the second frame is ¼” wide - resulting in ¼” of each colour showing.

To apply these directions to any quilt, adjust strip lengths to match your quilt size.

Finishing Touches

Applying First Frame: 1/2" wide green frame.

Applying First Frame: 1/2" wide green frame.

frame One: 1/2” wide - Green

Cut 4 strips: 1.5" wide x 36” long each.

Iron each strip in half lengthwise.

Align the raw edge of the green framing strip with the raw edge of the quilted piece.

Sew with a 1/4" seam.

Repeat for all four sides. (as shown at right)

Applying second frame: 1/4" wide orange

Applying second frame: 1/4" wide orange

frame Two: ¼” wide - Orange

Cut 4 strips: 1" wide x 36" long each.

Iron each strip in half lengthwise.

Lay this strip on top of the green frame, aligning raw edge of  the orange frame with the raw edges of the quilted piece.

Binding: ¼” wide - Bluebird

Cut 4 strips: 2.5" x the width of the fabric.

Sew them together at a 45 degree angle to make a continuous binding strip. (For Majesty, you'll need at least 153 linear inches.)

Iron in half lengthwise.

Lay on top of framing pieces, aligning raw edge of binding with raw edges of quilt.

Sew with a ¼” seam, mitering the corners.

If using a sleeve, I suggest adding it now.

Hand stitch the folded edge of the binding to the back.

Stitch down the bottom edge of the sleeve if you have put one on.
