Solstice and Equinox Make Along - Hand & Machine, Virtual class

Half Day: classes run Wednesday, February 12 & 26, March 12 & 26, April 9 & 23, May 7, 2025,10:00 am - 2:30 pm

Class size limited to 20

Let’s have quilting fun, enjoy camaraderie and learn! All while making Solstice & Equinox.

You will learn the quick and easy steps in Eye of the Beholder’s signature methods: trace, snip, iron and stitch for machine stitching and trace, baste, snip & stitch for hand work. You’ll use reverse applique with applique to make the 4 Sun blocks (10” x 10”). You’ll learn tips for trimming and stitching reverse applique of small areas as we make the 4 Moon blocks (5” x 5”) and how to applique use our method for straight applique as you make the 8 vine border blocks (5” x 10”).  We’ll learn about strip piecing and chain stitching to make our 4-patch blocks, and the value of squaring up and trimming.

You decide whether you want to make your Solstice & Equinox quilt top by hand or machine. I’ll teach you what you need to know and help you every step of the way.

No matter how you decide to make it, you will get pointers on how to be successful. Machine makers will get tips on satin stitch that covers the raw edges, giving you sharp points without “xes” and crisp corners.  Hand stitchers will learn how to get clean crisp inside and outside points without frays. Both stitchers will learn how to stitch smooth, graceful curves.

This Make-Along will meet every other week for 7 times beginning on February 12 and ending on May 9, for 4 1/2 hours each time. You’ll have two weeks In-between classes to stitch your blocks so you’re ready for the next lesson or step of construction.  Learn with others and experience the fun and beauty of reverse appliqué while making new quilting friends.

After checking your supplies at home, please be sure to order everything you need from the website so you are properly prepared. Having the right tools will make all the difference in the world for your pleasure and success.  Remember, in a Virtual class there will not be a product table for you to purchase items from during class if you find your tools are not working.  I would hate for you to be frustrated and discouraged.  I truly desire for you to have the best possible experience in my class.

Prep for Solstice & Equinox: Make Along

Hand and Machine

  • It goes without saying that you do not need to choose the same colors as we did for our samples, but use the picture and pattern color information as a guide in selecting your own color palette.  Whatever colors you choose, we request you choose batiks for this project.

    Please come to class with:

    ·         Purchase the Solstice & Equinox pattern as a PDF digital or print version prior to class.

    ·         Cut your fabrics according to the pattern cutting directions.

    ·         Read the pattern through prior to class and give some thought to whether you want to make your piece by hand or machine

    ·         If you feel comfortable, trace each sun pattern onto the wrong side of your Sun block background fabric (“yellow”) if making by hand, or onto the paper side of the flexi-fuse if making by machine. We will start with the Spring Equinox Sun block.

    ·         Gather all your supplies and have at the ready for class.
